Do not steal

St. Monica's Parish Hall - 6405 Terrebonne, Montreal, Qc.

“Can you steal your own property?”, asks a nervous young woman, raising a curious ethical conundrum. It soon becomes a critical and dramatic moral issue: the “property” in question is, in fact, a little girl, the object of violent contention between mother and grandmother. Years before, the young woman had a baby fathered by her schoolteacher. Her mother – principal of the school – has illegally adopted the child, and is raising her as her own, in the presence of the child’s mother/sister. In the terrible moral/psychological struggle for dominance, both women insist “I love her, she’s mine.” In the end, dark tragedy envelopes the three women and their two men, dramatically expressed in the final shot of the film, a direct reference to Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”
