Video Divina: A Short Film about Killing

Decalogue Five Extended Version

St. Monica's Parish Hall - 6405 Terrebonne, Montreal, Qc.

This original and longer version of Decalogue Five juxtaposes two senseless deaths: a brutal murder and a legal, but equally brutal, execution. The first half of the film recounts a few hours of three inhabitants of Warsaw: a young, principled lawyer, who faces tough questions during his bar-exam; a sullen, angry young man who wanders aimlessly about the city creating havoc; a surly taxi driver, who becomes his random victim in a terrible murder. In the second part of the film, the lawyer visits the young criminal, his client, in his prison cell on the day of his execution. The scene is altogether grim, but in the deeply personal conversation between the two men, we perceive, quite literally, a mysterious glimmer of hope.
