Video Divina: Decalogue Two

Respect the name of the Lord

St. Monica's Parish Hall - 6405 Terrebonne, Montreal, Qc.

A hymn to life, to the lives of four people, the film begins with a nasty confrontation between a reclusive and melancholic old man, a respected oncologist, and an elegant younger woman, musician in the symphony, who live in the same apartment building. The woman is desperate to know if her husband, critically ill in the doctor’s care, will survive. She is pregnant by another man, and plans to have an abortion if her husband gets better. The doctor, knowing that the life of the unborn child is in his hands, refuses to offer a clear prognosis. Just when the moral tension seems to reach a point of tragic no return, we see the woman, playing her violin in a concert, look up towards someone in the audience: for the first time in the film, she smiles.
