Video Divina: Decalogue Eight

St. Monica's Parish Hall - 6405 Terrebonne, Montreal, Qc.

Directed by: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Poland, 1988 - Polish with English subtitles

The film is set in Warsaw during the martial-law regime of Jaruzelski, but it reaches back 45 years to the Nazi occupation of the city, where we unknowingly witness an unspeakable sin/crime. In the present time of the film, the two protagonists of that terrible event – an aged professor of ethics, and a middle-aged writer and translator – meet, face each other in a powerful and painful confrontation, which at first seems to offer no hope. But grace visits the encounter of the two women, compassion brings them together: a powerful moral and spiritual victory is won.
